York Festival of Ideas 2019 will take place from 4 to 16 June under the banner of A World of Wonder. It includes more than 200 mostly free events to educate, entertain and inspire.

Join in the conversation at York Festival of Ideas as they explore the contribution of higher education to society. Expert speakers at the Festival Focus Day What Have Universities Ever Done For Us?  will seek to define what universities have done to contribute to society from the perspective of science, technology and economic development; social justice, social mobility and lifelong learning; and the arts and humanities. Taking place on Saturday 8 June, the free Focus Day is presented in collaboration with UPP Foundation and HE for Research Professional.

Speakers include Hamish McAlpine of Research England; Sue Hartley and Deborah Smith of the University of York; Maths teacher and University Challenge star Bobby Seagull; Andy Westwood of the University of Manchester; Philip Long of V&A Dundee; Faye Taylor of the Association of Commonwealth Universities; and Alain Beretz, former Director-General for Research and Innovation at the French Ministry for Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
