N8 Research: Regional policing, new Chair and Equipment Sharing Toolkit

Welcome to the first N8 e-bulletin of 2014.

The year got off to a flying start in January, with the funding award by the College of Policing to build an N8 regional network for evidence-based policing. The network will support police forces, Police and Crime Commissioners and academics working together to look at new methods and techniques for tackling crime. This work is well underway and workshops have already taken place on domestic violence, drugs and alcohol and cyber crime. This is an exciting new area of work for us, and I am looking forward to seeing the outcomes later this year.

I am delighted to welcome Sir Alan Langlands, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds, as Chair of the N8. Alan takes over from Professor Chris Brink who has been our Chair since 2012. I would like to express huge thanks on behalf of everyone involved with the N8 for Chris’s leadership over the last two years. Alan's knowledge of the HE sector will be vital as we continue to develop new ways to collaborate.

Finally, we have also launched the new N8 Equipment Sharing Toolkit. Developed by professionals in the eight universities, the toolkit will make it easier for researchers to collaborate using the state of the art equipment available across the N8 universities. We’ve already had some great feedback on the toolkit, and will be updating this as a live document.

I hope you enjoy reading our latest news. Please do get in touch with your comments and ideas.

N8 Partnership establishes regional policing research hub

The N8 Research Partnership has been awarded £50,000 by the College of Policing, the professional body for policing in England and Wales, to further links between academics and police forces.

The funding is to create a regional hub for evidence-based policing so that police methods and techniques for tackling crime can be tested, helping the police service to become more efficient.

The network is initially focused around eight key themes, and will work with policing practitioners to build their understanding of evidence-based research and give them opportunities to start research in their own area of expertise, which can then be shared with colleagues in other forces across the country.

Toolkit launched to encourage greater sharing of university research equipment

The N8 Equipment Sharing Toolkit aims to address many of the operational issues that can arise when university research equipment is shared.

Much of the work in developing the toolkit has focussed on creating a framework that will enable universities sharing equipment to meet the terms of VAT cost sharing models - traditionally seen as a barrier for sharing research assets. The toolkit also covers pricing and charging, contracts and legal, and health and safety.
