The five current themes chosen as pilots were based on existing research strengths in the N8 universities in 2004 and the potential for economic impact. They were chosen from a short list of more than a dozen. This mapping exercise has now been repeated to take into account changes in the universities since 2004. The mapping exercise showed five areas of real strength within the N8 group that also mapped onto major global growth markets.
