The N8 universities are situated in a region that contains 5 of the UK’s major urban areas. If the North were a country it would have the 10th largest economy in the EU and the N8 universities make a significant contribution to this economy through their business activities and research outputs.
The Power of 8
According to the recently commissioned report, The Power of 8: Knowledge, Innovation and Growth for the North, the N8 universities contributed £12.2 bn to the Northern economy in 2014/15, and supported employment for over 119,000 FTE positions. A future vision for the North should strengthen emerging sectors with world-class research, innovation strengths, and growth potential. Life Sciences is one of the most vibrant sectors in the north. There are over 1,000 businesses supporting over 38,000 jobs in the region and the N8 universities are working with SMEs as well as multi-national companies to support innovation and growth throughout the sector.
N8 universities expertise and experience of collaborative working, partnership and trust is being applied to develop new ways of working to maximise the use of new and existing research assets. We are working to promote efficiency through the use of the N8 Equipment Database and Shared Major Facilities. We have also published a number of policy reports and guidelines.
